Simon Story

Parish Priest

Fr Simon was ordained priest on 9 February 2002 at the Waipawa Town Hall in Central Hawkes' Bay by Bishop Owen Dolan. The church of St Patrick's in Waipawa, was considered too small to host an ordination. Amazingly the bones of Bishop Pomallier, which were on hikoi from Bluff to Motuti for reinterment, passed through Waipawa at the time of the ordination. The liturgy was halted after the Gospel for a brief prayer outside, with Bishop Pompalliers' bones, before continuing the journey. Fr Simon was formed at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel for 2 years. The seminary relocated to Ponsonby, Auckland in 1997.

Tom Lawn

Diocesan Priest

Tom Lawn (Diocesan Priest) was ordained in the Arch-Diocese of Wellington in 1975 and then joined the Diocese of Palmerston North in 1987. The Parishes in which he has served are as follows:  St Joseph’s Wellington (1 year); St Patrick’s Paraparaumu (5 years); St Canise’s Westport (1 year); Society of St James in Equador (5years); St Joseph’s Parish New Plymouth (1987-2009); Sacred Heart Inglewood & St Joseph’s Waitara Parishes (4 years); St Joseph’s Hawera (4 years) and Catholic Parish of New Plymouth for the past 4 years.  Tom says’ he returned to New Plymouth “to do what they ask me to do when I agree with it”.

Ireen Crossan

Ireen has worked for the parish "for some time"... Ireen is responsible for the Administration matters of the parish, in conjunction with Claire.

"I do my best to ensure the smooth running of the parish occurs every day of the week and hope to convey to each and every person who contacts the Parish Office that they are important and that your enquiries reach the right person".

Young Families Minister

The Young Families Minister role includes everything related to young families (parents and children up to 12 years old) across the parish. 

The primary focus is to develop more connections for families in our Faith community. This has included but is not limited to, coordinating the First Sacraments and the Older Children’s Baptism programmes, supporting infant Baptism, children’s Liturgy and connecting with our Catholic schools (primary and intermediate).

Susilo is of Indonesian provenance. He came to NZ with the Institute for World Evangelization, (ICPE) in 2012.

Amelia Luke

Music Coordinator

Amelia Luke joined the team as Music Coordinator in February 2022. The role oversees everything involving music within our parish community.  Amelia is keen to encourage all to actively participate musically, so please add your voice to the singing within Mass!

Amelia says, “Music is a wonderful and powerful tool that can send liturgy to immeasurable heights.  We are fortunate here at St Joseph’s to have many volunteer musicians helping us achieve that goal. From the deep, beautiful and intricate palate of the Organ, to the lush, harmonious, youthful sounds of our Youth Band, ‘The Mustard Seeds’ – please, embrace it all! 

Music is food for the soul and ‘they who sing, pray twice’.  Future musical developments are in the pipeline! This is an exciting time as our parish moves forward! I look forward to meeting with you at Mass”.
